Back to chapter

Introduction

In order to be efficient, the continuous competence development of youth workers should be based on a thorough analysis of local outcomes, strength and weaknesses. Starting from the follow up of clear and measurable indicators, this analysis will show what competences that need to be improved in order to answer to actual challenges and to provide, even, better youth work.

Guiding questions

To what degree does our local youth work meet this bullet point?

Are there sides/aspects of it that are not reached?
Are there differences related to different activities?

Are there other differences? Related to what?

Specific questions
  • Do we have a local competency framework, stating which competences we consider important in order to carry out quality youth work?
    • How could such a framework help us in competence development and recruitment?
  • How do we secure that youth workers have the competences needed to handle current challenges?
    • How do we analyse outcomes of youth work in the perspective of competences needed?
  • How to we support youth workers to take part in different external trainings and seminars, offered by for example SALTO Centres?
  • Don’t we acknowledge the need for competence development of youth workers?
    • Don’t we see youth work (paid or voluntary) as a profession?

Can we find good practices or tools that might help us to improve this?
Do we have positive experiences from other areas of youth work that we can use also in this case?
Are there other organisations that we can contact and learn from regarding this?
Do we need to take other measures?
Do we have to revise our perspectives and/or priorities regarding youth work?
